Scallop Pond Paddle to the "Port of Missing Men," 3-4 hr r/t (paddlers 12 and up in good physical condition)
Price:$455 for group of 4 paddlers, $95 per additional paddler
We embark on our roughly 6 mile r/t journey from the shores of Bullhead Bay from the landing at the end of Barkers Island Road. Paddling north along the eastern shore of Ram Island, where at low tide we witness the 'Dance of the Fiddler Crabs'-a time when these crustaceans come out of their burrows in search of food. Continuing north, we cross Sebonac Inlet and touch the southern shores of Tern Island. As we glide past shore birds and mussel shoals, keep an eye open for one of our resident Osprey. They frequent the mouths of Sebonac and Little Sebonac Inlets as they hold schools of Menhaden, an abundant large baitfish that frequents the area. As we pass the northern shores of Tern Island, we have Cow Neck Preserve ahead of us and Wolf Swamp Sanctuary to our East. We are now paddling through the waters of West Neck Creek. A little over a mile ahead, through salt marsh grasses and hardwood hammocks, we follow the creek to the mouth of Scallop Pond. On the Northern side of Scallop Pond we reach the 'Port of Missing Men,' quite a sight, designed to resemble the stern of an old sailing ship. This property was owned and developed by the Standard Oil family as a place to invite friends and 'get away.'
Kayak Clam Bake
After paddling the shoreline enjoy a freshly prepared classic clam bake courtesy of That Shuckin' Guy. No better way to enjoy lobster, clams, mussels, and corn on the cob than sitting at the waters edge after a great paddle.
